Kennedy Center Honors 2019: Earth, Wind Fire; Linda Ronstadt
Larry joined Earth, Wind and Fire in 1971 at the age of 18, wrote many of their great songs, including their only Number 1 Pop hit “Shining Star.” In 1975 on May 24th at 21 years old, together Larry Dunn and Maurice White did the powerful arrangement on the Beatles tune “Got to Get You Into My Life” for the film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; Earth, Wind & Fire appeared in the movie and performed the song.
Larry was instrumental in creating the title tracks for the albums Spirit, the double album Faces, and many more. Dunn assumed the position of musical director at the age of 21! At the same time, while performing, writing, and touring with the group, Dunn also took time out to begin a long journey, and still to this day is producing and writing for many other great artists such as Ramsey Lewis, Luisa Dunn, Hilliard Wilson, Level 42, Ronnie Laws, Bunny Brunel, Hubert Laws, Kaylene Peoples, DJ Cassidy, Mary J. Blige, Stanley Turrentine, Lenny White, Phillip Guillory, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Diana Reeves, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, and many more.

Yes, Larry Dunn composed those dreamy, complex yet memorable chord progressions, laying the foundation that supported the melodies and deep lyrics. Dunn’s own composition, “Shining Star,” skyrocketed Earth, Wind, & Fire to worldwide fame and was the inspiration for many famous musical artists, including Stevie Wonder.
Stevie Wonder
“Stevie Wonder actually showed up a couple of years ago at one of my concerts, came on stage and after performing at his request “Shining Star” with me. Stevie told the crowd the first time he heard “Shining Star” on the radio, he went to his keyboard and wrote his legendary song ‘I Wish!!!'” – Larry Dunn, Schmooze Jazz Magazine

“We’re excited because we get to see San Diego. I think the last time Luisa and I were down there was probably 25 years ago, believe it or not. I’m sure a lot has changed, but everybody says that of course it’s still gorgeous and beautiful. And the people are wonderful in that area. So, we’re really looking forward to it.” – Larry Dunn

Luisa Dunn is no stranger to the music industry. As part of the dynamic “Dunn” duo, she has been the supportive, silent partner and co-creator of LDO (Larry Dunn Orchestra), as well as a recipient of many humanitarian awards herself. On October 28th Luisa Dunn will be awarded Song of the Year at the Arts 4 Peace Awards Show held at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills. Larry Dunn, original member of Earth, Wind & Fire, will be presenting the award.
Luisa Dunn is a powerhouse in her own right, aside from singing lead, backgrounds, and songwriting, she is also a great interpreter of music and has done just that with a popular song from Swing Out Sister called “Twilight World.” On N2 the Journey, Luisa is starring in her own beautiful rendition of the beloved tune. It’s hard to remake a song that was done so well the first time around. But she managed to breath a brand new spirit into it. Her smooth vocals lull us into a blissful comfort zone. “Twilight World” lives on track #5 on the N2 the Journey CD, and “5” is the number of Grace.
Whether it be singing backgrounds on Larry Dunn’s Anthology of Earth, Wind & Fire; co-composing and co-performing on the song “Lulu” from Bunny Brunel & Stanley Clarke’s historical CD Bass Ball; or starring on her own forthcoming CD—Luisa has a style that speaks volumes! And we’d like to congratulate Luisa Justiz Dunn on her well deserved honor!
“Swing Out Sister’s music is timeless. It brings light. It allows people to be in a place of hope and love to soothe the soul.” –Luisa Dunn

From one Hall of Fame inductee to another, keyboardist/composer Larry Dunn (formerly Earth Wind & Fire), a multi-award-winning artist and Hall of Famer, will be presenting the Hall of Fame Award to famed Sax player Ronnie Laws at the Los Angeles Black Music Awards & Hall of Fame Inductions. What better representative than Dunn . . . for he is a 6-time Grammy-winner and 13 GRAMMY nominations, four American Music Awards, 32 Gold and Platinum/Multi-Platinum records and albums, a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2000) and Songwriters Hall of Fame (2010), and the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award (2016), as well as other industry awards that Larry shares with the group.
Ronnie Laws has performed and recorded with countless iconic, chart-topping musicians, but may best be known for combining the exploratory heart of Jazz with the broader reaching strains of Soul and Pop music. His first hit, “Always There” (credited as Ronnie Laws and Pressure on the original 45), was one of the most popular, sax-driven, cross-over hits of the 70s Jazz-Funk Fusion era. He ushered in the sensualization of the soprano sax with Quiet Storm gems such as “Grace,” “Karmen,” and “Just Love.” “Pressure Sensitive,” “Fever,” and “Friends and Strangers” (Blue 70’s: Blue Note Got Soul), the title track of his third album, all propelled to gold status.
Los Angeles Black Music Awards & Hall of Fame Inductions will be held Sunday, September 9, 2018, at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, CA, at 5pm. Call the BMA National Office 916-477-0157 for info.
“It is truly an honor for my lifetime friend Larry Dunn to be the presenter of my Hall of Fame Award. My career success could not have existed without his musical genius and contribution to my journey as an artist.” – Ronnie Laws
Ooh la la, the excitement, the energy, the mix of creative, powerfully artistic human beings describes the fourth edition of Melanie Wise and Zac Baldwin’s brainchild – the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival! It was our first time there and AGENDA was honored to co-sponsor. We love niche, and this is one festival that focuses on a very specific one.
Agenda – Melanie, share some highlights of 2018 AWIAFF
Melanie Wise – Our last edition was the bomb! I was so incredibly pleased because we were able to honor our very first female director, Rosemary Rodriguez. Since our festival celebrates powerful women, it was really a great honor, and so very perfect, to finally be able to recognize a female director at a festival with a focus such as ours. And in all honesty, our whole team felt so grateful to be able to recognize our 2018 honorees (Michelle Rodriguez, Ming-Na Wen, Rosemary Rodriguez, TJ Scott, Dana DeLorenzo, and stunt performers Debbie Evan, Alicia Vela-Bailey, Danielle Burgio, Heidi Pascoe, Kachina Dechert and Cassandra Ebner). Each of them were so deserving and some of them have never been publicly recognized for their contributions to female action and empowerment heroes onscreen.
“We celebrate powerful women taking action on the silver screen. From female action heroes to female activists, we will shine a spotlight on females in narrative and documentary films who are fearless, fierce, and revolutionary.” –AWIAFF Festival Director, Melanie Wise
Is there really only one way to invite filmmakers to submit their love, sweat, and tears of a movie to the appropriate film festival? Many filmmakers have just randomly selected movie competitions without much insight as to whether or not their film will even make it to official selections. Some filmmakers weigh their chances of nomination with what has screened in past festivals, therefore narrowing down their entry choices. Let’s face it, those entry fees add up, so you’d better pick carefully.
