Larry Dunn to Present Black Hall of Fame Award 2018 to Ronnie Laws

la-black-music-awards-hall-of-fame-inductions-2018

From one Hall of Fame inductee to another, keyboardist/composer Larry Dunn (formerly Earth Wind & Fire), a multi-award-winning  artist and Hall of Famer, will be presenting the Hall of Fame Award to famed Sax player Ronnie Laws at the Los Angeles Black Music Awards & Hall of Fame Inductions.  What better representative than Dunn . . . for he is a 6-time Grammy-winner and 13 GRAMMY nominations, four American Music Awards, 32 Gold and Platinum/Multi-Platinum records and albums, a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2000) and Songwriters Hall of Fame (2010), and the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award (2016), as well as other industry awards that Larry shares with the group.

Larry-Dunn-Ronnie-Laws

Ronnie Laws has performed and recorded with countless iconic, chart-topping musicians, but may best be known for  combining the exploratory heart of Jazz with the broader reaching strains of Soul and Pop music. His first hit, “Always There” (credited as Ronnie Laws and Pressure on the original 45), was one of the most popular, sax-driven, cross-over hits of the 70s Jazz-Funk Fusion era. He ushered in the sensualization of the soprano sax with Quiet Storm gems such as “Grace,” “Karmen,” and “Just Love.” “Pressure Sensitive,” “Fever,” and “Friends and Strangers” (Blue 70’s: Blue Note Got Soul), the title track of his third album, all propelled to gold status.

Los Angeles Black Music Awards & Hall of Fame Inductions will be held Sunday, September 9, 2018, at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, CA, at 5pm.  Call the BMA National Office 916-477-0157 for info.

“It is truly an honor for my lifetime friend Larry Dunn to be the presenter of my Hall of Fame Award.  My career success could not have existed without his musical genius and contribution to my journey as an artist.” – Ronnie Laws

Interview with Artemis Director/Founder Melanie Wise About the 5th Edition Film Festival

AGENDA | Aug. 25, 2018

Ooh la la, the excitement, the energy, the mix of  creative, powerfully artistic human beings describes the fourth edition of Melanie Wise and Zac Baldwin’s brainchild – the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival!  It was our first time there and AGENDA was honored to co-sponsor. We love niche, and this is one festival that focuses on a very specific one.

Agenda – Melanie, share some highlights of 2018 AWIAFF

Melanie Wise – Our last edition was the bomb! I was so incredibly pleased because we were able to honor our very first female director, Rosemary Rodriguez. Since our festival celebrates powerful women, it was really a great honor, and so very perfect, to finally be able to recognize a female director at a festival with a focus such as ours. And in all honesty, our whole team felt so grateful to be able to recognize our 2018 honorees (Michelle Rodriguez, Ming-Na Wen, Rosemary Rodriguez, TJ Scott, Dana DeLorenzo, and stunt performers Debbie Evan, Alicia Vela-Bailey, Danielle Burgio, Heidi Pascoe, Kachina Dechert and Cassandra Ebner). Each of them were so deserving and some of them have never been publicly recognized for their contributions to female action and empowerment heroes onscreen.

Filmmakers with Strong Women Characters Wanted for the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival 2019

Is there really only one way to invite filmmakers to submit their love, sweat, and tears of a movie to the appropriate film festival? Many filmmakers have just randomly selected movie competitions without much insight as to whether or not their film will even make it to official selections. Some filmmakers weigh their chances of nomination with what has screened in past festivals, therefore narrowing down their entry choices. Let’s face it, those entry fees add up, so you’d better pick carefully.

Women at Warp Episode S14: Chatting with Chase

women-at-warp-chase-masterson

Sue recently had the pleasure of chatting with Deep Space Nine’s Chase Masterson. We talk about the 25th Anniversary of DS9, and the impact that the characters and the show have had, as well as the recent Star Trek Online expansion, Victory in Life, in which Chase returns to the role of Leeta. And then we go on to talk about Chase’s charity work and her organization, the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, and what we can all do to end bullying. As well as bullying in general, and within fan culture. This also ties into our next full episode of Women at Warp, in which the crew will be taking a look at toxic fan culture, and what can be done about it.

Content Warning: We discuss specific incidents of bullying and harassment.

By Trekor.com

Back in March, we reported that Star Trek Online was getting a runabouts’-worth of Deep Space Ninecast members back for their 25th Anniversary “Victory is Life” game expansion which debuts next month — and this week we had the opportunity to chat with Trek actress Chase Masterson, who returns to Federation space to reclaim the role of Leeta.

In our conversation, we explore what one-time barmaid — and now wife of Grand Nagus Rom — is up to in the nearly two decades since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine concluded its on-screen adventure, as well as touch on several other topics close to the actor’s heart. (Read more…)
