Chase Masterson Hosts the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival’s 6th Edition Live Events April 23-25, 2021.

Chase Masterson & Artemis Key Art

AWIAFF 2021 announces the host of their virtual film festival; the founders Melanie Wise and Zac Baldwin talk about what to expect for the 6th edition; and Artemis Women in Action Film Festival welcomes Ameri Law PC, Final Draft, Action Factory, and AXTionWear as sponsors.

As the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival (AWIAFF) gears up for their 6thedition, hosting for the second year is Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space 9The FlashER). Masterson is an award-winning actress and a singer who has amassed a growing list of credits that also include founder and spokesperson of the Pop Culture Hero Coalition: a charity with the mission to teach real-life heroism over bullying, racism, misogyny, and more. Chase Masterson divides her time between her nonprofit and her busy career in entertainment.

“Women are still unsung heroes in so many capacities. The Artemis Women In Action Film Fest is the exception to that rule with a brilliant celebration of filmmakers who feature brave and exciting women onscreen, highlighting both individuals and this vital area of the entertainment industry as a whole. This type of entertainment would not exist as we know it without these intrepid souls, and it is an honor to host the AWAIFF, to hear their stories and to celebrate their spectacular work.” –Chase Masterson

“It’s been a pleasure for me to look at all the projects coming in from all over the world.  Through all different genres and styles is the running theme of strong women kickin’ ass in a variety of ways.  This year was especially hard to pare down hundreds of entries to 80 creators this year with 52 films, 12 screenplay finalists, and 16 music finalists.” Artemis Co-Founder Zac Baldwin

“I’m incredibly excited about this year’s live virtual events (happening Apr 23-25, 2021).  We are placing this year’s focus squarely upon the creators in 2021 Official Selections. Our hope is to offer our audience members an amazing opportunity to see these works and get to know the creators.  Additionally, we are offering our signature panel, ‘The All-Stars of Stunts,’ because the stunt community is the bedrock that brings female action and empowerment heroes to life; it has been a staple of the festival since its inception, and one that we could not forego!” – Artemis Executive Director & Founder, Melanie Wise

About Artemis Women In Action Film Festival:

Melanie Wise and Zac Baldwin, two filmmakers with a longtime love of female-driven action films, together founded the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival. Wise and Baldwin have produced shorts and features, focusing on female action projects. They saw that audiences around the world loved the genre despite the fact that studios (for many years) claimed female action films were box office poison. In 2014, the idea of Artemis was born with the intent to create a space where these types of films could play for audiences with an unsatisfied hunger of female-driven action films.

Women at Warp Episode S14: Chatting with Chase

women-at-warp-chase-masterson

Sue recently had the pleasure of chatting with Deep Space Nine’s Chase Masterson. We talk about the 25th Anniversary of DS9, and the impact that the characters and the show have had, as well as the recent Star Trek Online expansion, Victory in Life, in which Chase returns to the role of Leeta. And then we go on to talk about Chase’s charity work and her organization, the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, and what we can all do to end bullying. As well as bullying in general, and within fan culture. This also ties into our next full episode of Women at Warp, in which the crew will be taking a look at toxic fan culture, and what can be done about it.

Content Warning: We discuss specific incidents of bullying and harassment.

INTERVIEW: Chase Masterson Revisits ‘Leeta’ in Newest STAR TREK ONLINE Expansion, “Victory is Life”

mirror-leeta

By Trekor.com

Back in March, we reported that Star Trek Online was getting a runabouts’-worth of Deep Space Ninecast members back for their 25th Anniversary “Victory is Life” game expansion which debuts next month — and this week we had the opportunity to chat with Trek actress Chase Masterson, who returns to Federation space to reclaim the role of Leeta.

In our conversation, we explore what one-time barmaid — and now wife of Grand Nagus Rom — is up to in the nearly two decades since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine concluded its on-screen adventure, as well as touch on several other topics close to the actor’s heart. (Read more…)

Arcgames.com Interviews Chase Masterson

Star Trek Online, the free-to-play online role-playing game based in the iconic Star Trek universe, is thrilled to reunite twelve of the original cast members from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for the new PC expansion, Victory is Life. Joining the crew aboard the infamous space station is Chase Masterson, who is reprising the role of Leeta, former Bajoran Dabo girl and wife to Ferenginar’s Grand Nagus, Rom. The Star Trek Online team had a chance to sit down with Chase after her recording session at Cryptic Studios to talk about her return to the game (Captains may remember as Mirror Universe Leeta in Season 11: New Dawn) and the incredible work she’s been doing with her anti-bullying organization, Pop Culture Hero Coalition.

STO: Welcome back to Star Trek Online, Chase! Thank you for joining us. What is it like returning to the character of Leeta to see how she’s grown?

Chase Masterson: I really value the opportunity to do this. Part of the reason why is that I get to show a really more mature Leeta. I get to walk in the shoes of a woman who has been in charge of an entire empire with Rom, for nearly 20 years now. She’s someone who has definitely grown and come into her own. That was something I felt like I really wanted to do for a long time now. We saw quite a lot of that on the show, but here we see a Leeta who has grown into her own shoes.  She’s become an intelligent woman, a strategic thinker who is still very much adoring of her husband, but is able to walk beside him in a way that is extremely valuable.

STO: One of the interesting things about the character of Leeta is that she started off as more of a comic relief and then grew over the course of Deep Space Nine. What was it like playing a role like that?

CM: It was really interesting because a lot of people did see Leeta as eye candy. I’m grateful to say that she was in all the sweeps week episodes in that cat suit, and I think that was certainly one of the reasons why. But you have to credit our amazing writing team under the direction of Ira Behr for her growth and René Echevarria, who created Leeta; she was never just a Dabo girl, she was never just eye candy and they always had more of a vision for her than that. They had a vision of a woman who was very compassionate and knew how to stand up for justice.

“WE ALL CAN BE HEROES:” AN INTERVIEW WITH STAR TREK ONLINE’S CHASE MASTERSON

By massivelyop.com

With a dozen members of the all-star cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine returning to reprise their roles for this June’s Star Trek Online: Victory is Life, one actress has the advantage over the others. Chase Masterson is back for at least her third stint in the MMO, having played fan favorite Leeta in past updates (including as a hologram and as a Mirror Universe villain).

With the heavy Deep Space Nine focus on the game’s third expansion, it’s good to see the reunion of a cast from a show that’s now 25(!) years old. Masterson has since gone on to act in many TV shows and movies, perform as a jazz singer, and found an anti-bullying organization called Pop Culture Hero that uses film, comics, and TV to take a stand against bullying in schools and communities.

We sat down with Masterson to talk about reprising the role of Leeta, the continuation of Deep Space Nine, the benefits of maturity, and how we all can be heroes. (Read More…)

Chase Masterson Representing at Vienna Comic Con 2017

Chase Masterson is known for her iconic role in Star Trek Deep Space 9 as sexy Leeta. She was the voice of Vienna Salavatori in Doctor Who and has starred in her own (Doctor Who Spinoff) series Vienna, appeared in countless other films and television shows, and even produced and starred in her own film, titled Yesterday Was a Lie.

Masterson heads a charity called The Pop Culture Hero Coalition, and has been the champion to youth who are systemically bullied; this has become an epidemic and Chase Masterson, Carrie Goldman, and the United Nations, along with their tireless volunteers have made their voices clear: Stop the bullying now! There’s more . . . Chase Masterson is the first woman in history to host the biggest Trek Con in Europe, Fed Con!  Her dossier just keeps growing.  She also was featured in Agenda magazine’s first historical, monthly print issue, October 2017, not just talking about her iconic and longstanding career, but in the second half of her interview with Agenda‘s editor-in-chief Kaylene Peoples, she discusses the mission of The Pop Culture Hero Coalition.  Now . . . we are proud to say, that Miss Masterson is now representing Start Trek and the coalition once again, this time in Vienna!

By Sheryl Aronson | July 31, 2017 | Hollywood 360

On July 18th, at Vitello’s Night Club in Studio City, Clifford Bell presented the musical show “Revolution,” which was hosted by Pop Culture Hero Coalition Founder, Chase Masterson.  The monies collected for this evening’s entertainment would go toward the organization, Pop Culture Hero Coalition.  The vocalists performing for the event were:  Chase Masterson, Kirsten Holly Smith, Keith Borden, Mandy Kemp, Justin Charles Cowden, Kaylene Peoples, Patricia Whitman, Mary Pat Bowe, and Clifford Bell.

The musical performances from the singers and the band peppered the audience with inspirational songs that lifted one’s spirit.  Chase Masterson looked stunning in a twilight blue gown as she interweaved herself from announcing acts, sharing encouraging stories of people overcoming bullying, to singing a few numbers as well.  Doing a campy version of “The Swinger,” Chase projected the aura of a torch singer from old.  Her golden voice pierced the hearts of us all when she crooned the tune, “Pure Imagination.”  Using her dramatic flair, Chase enchanted the entire room.

Masterson to Moderate “Gender Gap” Panel at U.N.

StarTrek.com | March 16, 2017 |

Chase Masterson, on Friday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, will moderate “Closing the Gender Gap in Entertainment: Systemic Social Change Through Media,” a panel which the actress/singer/activist — and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Leeta — is also producing. The panel will feature Women’s March on Washington chair Carmen Perez and Teen Vogue editor Lauren Duca.

“It is a supreme honor to moderate this groundbreaking panel on the intersection of pop culture and women’s equality, as well as its economic implications,” Masterson told StarTrek.com. “Research shows that when more women are hired in entertainment, both on camera and in production, more women’s stories are told, and women are empowered in countless ways. I have always been an advocate for women, but the integrity of Star Trek’s message of equality has resonated with me increasingly due to DS9. The future is a place of unremitting inclusivity. Let’s make that future start now.”

Co-sponsors for the event are the United Nations Association, San Diego Chapter, where Masterson serves on the Advisory Board, and Pop Culture Hero Coalition, which Masterson founded with anti-bullying expert Carrie Goldman in 2013. The Coalition is the first non-profit to make a stand against bullying, misogyny, racism and other forms of hate, using stories from TV, comics and film. They work in schools, comic-cons and communities.

The notable list of panelists participating in Friday’s event will include Bettina Hausmann, president & executive director of the UN Association, San Diego Chapter; Ravi Karkara, UN Women co-chair, Policy Strategy Group, World We Want 2020; comics icon and inclusivity advocate Gail Simone; Coalition co-founder and award-winning author Carrie Goldman (Bullied: What Every Parent Teacher and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear); author and founder of Geek Girl Con, Jennifer K. Stuller; and author Dr. Janina Scarlet (Superhero Therapy).

“This fact also doesn’t escape me: both as an employee of Quark’s, and then as the wife of a Ferengi, Leeta was never expected to speak out, or to have any strength or voice of her own.” Masterson said. “She was basically expected to exist in service to men, objectified. But she didn’t conform to those stereotypes. Originally, some people saw Chase in the same way. So, yeah, not bad, for a Dabo Girl.”

The event will be live-streamed on Facebook at the Pop Culture Coalition page and the United Nations Association San Diego Chapter page on Friday, March 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 pm Eastern; it will be archived on those pages.

For more information, follow @SuperheroIRL, @UNASanDiego, and/or @Chase Masterson on Twitter.

Trek Stars Team Up To Fight Bullying in “Be Kind” Campaign

trekmovies.com | Jan 4, 2017

This year, the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, an anti-bullying non-profit founded by Chase Masterson (Leeta, DS9), has teamed up with Star Trek stars who ask that you start 2017 with a resolution to Be Kind to one another. You can join the fight and be a real life hero by pledging to be kind, and you can do it in style with a Be Kind tee shirt.

“Think before you type. Start 2017 with the resolution to #BeKind,” reads the description for one of the Pop Culture Hero Coalition’s holiday fundraiser tee shirts.

Star Trek, like other modern pop culture franchises, is at its core a message to understand one another, embrace diversity, and overall be excellent to each other. Chase Masterson, the coalition’s founder, saw this as an opportunity to create the first-ever organization that uses the universal appeal of comics, film & TV to create anti-bullying programs at pop culture events, and in schools and communities.

Their mission is simple:

To educate and support children, teens and adults to overcome bullying and social injustice, and to transform their struggles into strengths, using stories and characters from pop culture TV, film, and comics.

They do this by hosting events, organizing convention panels, and even developing lesson plans for schools. They’ve had huge successes helping kids affected by the San Bernardino mass shooting, those suffering from PTSD and bullying and inner city kids in places like Chicago. Currently, they are working to teach Trek’s ideal of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations (IDIC) in schools.

“We love our onscreen heroes. Why not be heroes, too? So many people have told us, ‘I wish you had this when I was in school.’” says Masterson. “Roddenberry created a powerful key to social justice, and we are continuing that work in real life. We have the opportunity to teach IDIC to kids, before it’s too late… before there are any more suicides, or broken hearts, or battered psyches due to bullying — and we truly appreciate your support in this crucial work”

You can help support the cause by purchasing a Be Kind tee, sweatshirt, or tank. Proceeds from sales will go directly to help the Coalition’s mission. Learn more about the Coalition’s work on their official website.
