The Performing Artist Magazine Debuts with Levy Lee Simon’s Powerful Journey from Stage to Memoir!

The Performing Artist Issue 1

The Performing Artist Magazine Debuts with Levy Lee Simon’s Powerful Journey from Stage to Memoir!

Kaylene Peoples launches The Performing Artist magazine, boldly exploring stagecraft, comedy, podcasting & more—curated to inspire today’s performers

Los Angeles, CA (PRUnderground) April 21st, 2025

Levy Lee Simon graces the cover of the inaugural issue of The Performing Artist, a genre-defying magazine that explores the full spectrum of creative expression—from writers and memoirists to playwrights, screenwriters, actors, comedians, podcasters, and more. Featuring original content, exclusive interviews, and thoughtful tributes, the debut edition shines a spotlight on the unsung heroes of performance while establishing the magazine as a vital new voice for those living life in the spotlight.

A prolific composer, award-winning publisher, and classically trained jazz artist, Kaylene Peoples is the founder of KL Publishing Group. With five magazines under her leadership—AGENDA, Schmooze Jazz, Virtuoso Bass, Jazz Influencers, and now The Performing Artist—she continues to elevate underrepresented voices and challenge industry norms through powerful editorial platforms. As author, curator, and executive editor, Peoples leads this launch issue with both her pen and vision—shaping its themes, contributing original writing, and steering the magazine into uncharted creative territory.

“I’ve lived this life—from the stage to the scoring studio,” she shares. “This magazine is a curated reflection of the artists I’ve admired, learned from, and collaborated with. It’s personal—and it’s time.”

The debut issue centers around playwright and actor Levy Lee Simon, whose memoir Odyssey Towards the Light traces his deeply personal journey from Harlem to Broadway and beyond. In an intimate interview, Simon reflects on transformation, addiction, and the evolution of identity through art. “I just feel happy that Book I is written,” he says. “Writing a memoir is a new experience, much different from writing a play or a movie script.”

A highlight of the issue is its tribute to the 77th Writers Guild Awards, with guest contributor Sheryl Aronson joining Peoples in honoring the screenwriters who shape the narrative spine of film and television. “Without writers, there is no performance,” says Peoples. “Their voices are the foundation of our industry, and they deserve the spotlight too.”

In her Editor’s Letter, Peoples describes how the issue was sculpted around the world of memoir and theatre—two profoundly expressive forms of storytelling. Publishing Simon’s memoir gave Peoples rare insight into a creative process she had long admired. “How does a playwright, screenwriter, and actor transition into memoir writing?” she asks. “Once that question came into focus, the entire issue seemed to create itself.”

Stage-to-Play-The Performing Artist 1_Page_2

In the feature From Stage to Page, the magazine explores that very question—highlighting literary pioneers like Tennessee Williams, August Wilson, Lorraine Hansberry, and Ntozake Shange, who transitioned from playwriting to memoir and reflective prose in powerful, culturally defining ways.

The magazine also confronts the darker realities behind comedy in “Laughter & Loss: The Tragic Genius of Freddie Prinze and Robin Williams,” revealing the often-hidden mental health struggles that accompany comic brilliance. Additional features explore the legacy of Lucille Ball, the Marx Brothers, Laugh-In, The Muppets, Dave Chappelle, and Seinfeld—offering a compelling timeline of comedic evolution and cultural relevance.

The Performing Artist 1

Wellness is another major theme, with a dedicated section offering grounded advice for staying mentally and physically healthy while navigating a life in the performing arts. From self-care and emotional boundaries to pacing and perspective, this section reminds artists that longevity in the spotlight begins with balance.

The issue also embraces podcasting as a fast-rising, performance-based storytelling medium. In “The Voice Behind the Mic,” Peoples explores the growth of podcasts and their new role in modern entertainment. As a fan of the medium herself, she offers both admiration and practical insight. Additional features tackle the real-world challenges that performers face—from burnout and rejection to creative reinvention and resilience—offering thoughtful, experience-driven guidance from seasoned thespians, vocalists, dancers, and multidisciplinary creators.

Among the standout features is A Star’s Tumble, an original fictional drama by Peoples that captures the raw chaos and unexpected triumph of life onstage. Mastering the Stage curates performance philosophies and career reflections from legends like Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, and Meryl Streep, offering readers timeless wisdom from the masters.

With stunning visuals, expert contributions, and Peoples’ visionary leadership anchoring every page, The Performing Artist stands not just as a magazine, but as a tribute to the courage, complexity, and brilliance of those who live for the craft.

The print and digital editions of The Performing Artist are available now. Visit KL Publishing Group for more information, or Email Us for media inquiries, interviews, or review requests. Now available on Amazon (U.S. and select international stores)!

Bunny Brunel Headlines ‘Altadena Aftermath Benefit Concert’—A Night of Music and Relief for Fire Victims

Presented by BackRhoades Productions at Gardena Cinema—A Night of Music Featuring Bunny Brunel, Kaylene Peoples, Nolan Shaheed, Elena Gilliam, Mahesh Balasooriya, Ricky Woodard, Joel Taylor, and More

Altadena, CA (PRUnderground) February 21st, 2025 | Release written by First Take PR

The Eaton Canyon Fire left Altadena in ruins—burning 14,021 acres, destroying 9,418 structures, and taking 29 lives. In response, Grammy-nominated bassist Bunny Brunel and an all-star lineup of musicians are joining forces for the Altadena Aftermath Benefit Concert on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Gardena Cinema. Hosted by BackRhoades Productions, this one-night-only event will raise critical funds to support displaced families and rebuilding efforts.

Spotlight Artists:

  • Bunny Brunel – Grammy-nominated bassist, fusion jazz pioneer, founder of CAB, and former member of Chick Corea’s band. He has performed & collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, and countless others.
  • Kaylene Peoples – A critically acclaimed jazz vocalist and flutist, as well as an award-winning composer, arranger, and producer who has performed/recorded with luminaries including Hubert Laws, Bobby Lyle, and Larry Dunn.
  • Nolan Shaheed – A legendary trumpeter and former music director for Marvin Gaye, who has performed with icons such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Stevie Wonder.
  • Joel Taylor – is a world-class drummer known for his versatility across jazz, fusion, and rock. He has performed with legendary artists such as Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, and Mike Stern.
  • Mahesh Balasooriya – A virtuoso jazz pianist who has played with Engelbert Humperdinck, Natalie Cole, and Al Jarreau.
  • Ricky Woodard – A highly regarded saxophonist, formerly with Ray Charles and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

Bunny Brunel on Giving Back Through Music

“I feel for all the people who lost their homes, their businesses, and, for some, even their lives. It is terrible to see so much destruction. When something like this happens, people need support—not just money, but hope. Music is something that brings people together, no matter where they are from or what they have been through. As musicians, we give what we have—our music. It may not rebuild a house, but it can bring comfort and strength to those who need it. That’s why I am playing in this concert. We want the people of Altadena to know we care, and we are here to help.”

Kaylene Peoples on the Personal Loss of The Mouse House Studio

“The Mouse House Studio was more than a recording space—it was a creative haven where I helped shape its vision. Originally a watchtower in the 1960s, we later converted into a studio that recorded some of the most iconic names in the industry under the expert engineering of Rich Mouser, who built and ran the studio for over two decades. Legendary artists, including Chris Cornell, Stanley Clarke, Oleander, Hubert Laws, Bobby Lyle, Mike Portnoy, and Bunny Brunel have recorded there. I found that place, helped build it, and decorated it—it was part of my creative world. This loss is heartbreaking. I recorded almost my entire discography there, hosted concerts, and even produced award-winning films in that space. This concert is personal for me—I want to give back through music, just as The Mouse House gave so much to so many.”

Continued Lineup & Featured Musicians

  • Elena Gilliam – Renowned jazz vocalist
  • Bryan Cabrera – Drummer and bandleader
  • Ladies of Song: Amber Weekes, Cathy Segal-Garcia and Lisa Andrea Torres
  • Little Brazil Trio – Natalia Spadini, Marcelo Bucater and Leo Testoni
  • Ollie Basie-O Elder – Bassist/vocalist

Additional Featured Musicians:
Joe Calderon – Guitarist
Randall Fisher – Saxophonist/Flutist
Fleming Robinson – Guitarist
J.T. Hudson – Trumpet
Jeff Littleton – Bassist
Anthony G. – Keys/Vocals
Jon Brooks – Percussionist/Drummer

Proceeds will go toward relief efforts for families who lost their homes, businesses, and livelihoods.

A Call to Action from Organizer Kevin Rhoades

Kevin Rhoades, founder of BackRhoades Productions, expressed his personal connection to the cause:

“On January 7, 2025, a single spark and 100 mph winds ignited wildfires throughout Los Angeles County. As a former Pasadena resident, I grew up just blocks below the Altadena fire zone. I prayed for my neighbors and the LA community as a whole. I decided to put my prayers into action. That’s why I organized the ‘Altadena Aftermath Benefit Concert’—to bring the community together and offer direct support to those in need.”

Altadena Aftermath-Sponsors and Lineup

Why Gardena Cinema?

The Gardena Cinema, the last remaining independent single-screen movie theater in the South Bay and the last family-owned single-screen theater in Los Angeles, has become an unexpected yet ideal partner for this event. Rhoades shared how the collaboration came about:

“One morning, I heard a news report about how single-screen theaters were struggling post-pandemic, and Gardena Cinema was mentioned specifically. I needed a venue for my jazz concerts, so I called the theater at 7 AM, expecting to leave a message. To my surprise, Judy Kim, the owner, answered immediately. I told her my idea, and she was on board from the start. That call led to a partnership that will now make a real difference in helping fire victims.”

About the Eaton Canyon Fire’s Destruction

The Eaton Fire has left an irreversible mark on Altadena and surrounding areas. Among the notable structures lost were:

  • Andrew McNally House – Historic Queen Anne-style mansion from 1887
  • Zorthian Ranch – 48-acre artist colony
  • Altadena Community Church – Beloved place of worship
  • Christmas Tree Lane – 140-year-old holiday tradition
  • The Mouse House Studio – Originally a watchtower, later transformed into a renowned recording studio founded by Rich Mouser, home to legendary artists.

The wildfire also disproportionately affected Altadena’s Black community, with nearly 50% of Black households destroyed or significantly damaged. Community leaders are working to prevent displacement and gentrification by securing housing relief and rebuilding efforts.

Sheryl Aronson’s New Song “On the Road to Your Heart” Debuts to iHeart Radio

"On the Road to Your Heart"

Celebrated Entertainment Journalist and Psychotherapist Ventures into Music with Emotional New Single

Los Angeles, CA, USA (PRUnderground) October 17th, 2024

Acclaimed entertainment journalist, photographer, and psychotherapist Sheryl Aronson has officially made her debut as a songwriter with the release of her heartfelt single, “On the Road to Your Heart,” released under Boogsey Music and now available across major streaming platforms, including iHeart Radio. Inspired by her three decades of work as a relationship therapist, the song blends poignant lyrics with smooth jazz and contemporary influences. Released in September 2024, “On the Road to Your Heart” marks a major milestone in Aronson’s diverse and illustrious career.

Aronson’s journey into songwriting was deeply personal, reflecting on themes of love, connection, and self-discovery. “‘On the Road to Your Heart was inspired by my work with couples as a relationship therapist for 30-plus years. As I wrote the lyrics, I contemplated what makes relationships challenging, heartbreaking, and yet, we still want to take the chance on love,” Aronson shared in a recent interview with Schmooze Jazz. “We are all walking down the road to each other’s heart when we are in a relationship, and sometimes feel lost and detoured on that journey. We are also journeying down the road to our own hearts as we understand what love means to us.

Collaborating with a talented team of musicians, including the renowned keyboardist and producer Gail Jhonson, Aronson elevated the original recording of the song into a polished, contemporary production. Jhonson, known for her work with the all-female group Jazz in Pink, infused the track with her signature blend of smooth jazz, funk, and R&B, while vocalists Britt Prentice and Castella brought Aronson’s lyrical vision to life along with musicians Terry Wollman (guitar), B. Thompson (soprano sax), and Jermone Randall (bass). “I totally trusted Gail with my song and knew the final product would be superb,” Aronson said. “She produced On the Road to Your Heart’ with her special golden touch.

Having spent much of her career highlighting the work of others through her journalism, Aronson’s foray into music comes as a natural evolution of her passion for the arts. She has covered high-profile artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Herbie Hancock, and Jeffrey Osborne, and now finds herself stepping into the spotlight with this deeply personal project. “The success of the song belongs to all my friends that have helped me create this beautiful production of ‘On the Road to Your Heart.’ It was a collaboration of what I did originally, with the talented artists who gave their heart and soul to this project,” Aronson expressed with gratitude.

With “On the Road to Your Heart” now gaining traction on platforms like iHeart Radio, Aronson plans to take the next step in her musical journey by developing the song into a full theatrical production. “What I’m working on next is developing the musical play, ‘On the Road to Your Heart,’” she revealed. “It will be a theatrical musical; however, it will also be an experiential interaction for the audience.

Over the years, Sheryl Aronson has written for various magazines, including AGENDASchmooze JazzChic Compass, and Bunny Brunel’s Virtuoso Bass, while photographing concerts and events across the globe. Now, with her debut as a songwriter, she continues to explore new creative territories, guided by her passion for human connection and storytelling.
